Ontario Fire College at the ESTC

In partnership with the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office, the ESTC is delivering the following programs:

NFPA 472 Hazardous Materials
Hazardous Materials Awareness

This course will enable individuals to recognize the presence of hazardous materials/weapons of mass destruction (WMD), protect themselves, call for trained personnel and secure the area. The student‐learner will be able to identify the name, UN/NA identification  number, type of placard or other distinctive marking applied for the hazardous materials/WMD involved, collect information from the  current edition of the Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG), identify container shapes that can indicate the presence of hazardous materials/WMD, identify the basic information on material safety data sheets (MSDS) and shipping papers for hazardous materials.

This course is delivered through a self-directed e-learning platform through OFC pre‐class portal.

Air Monitoring and Detection

This course is designed for the Hazmat Responder at the Operations or Technician level.  This 3-day course covers chemical terminology, properties and their application to monitoring, sensor terminology, interpretation of readings provided by the monitor,  and maintenance.  Radiation detection and monitoring are also discussed.  The course offers hands‐on training with scenarios and  chemical testing.

Hazardous Materials Core Operations

Hazmat training focuses on the recognition of a hazardous materials emergency, personnel safety, hazard assessment, and the notification of higher skilled emergency responders or technical response teams. Students will become familiar with the Emergency  Response Guidebook and learn about the mandate and authority of the Canadian Transport Emergency Centre (CANUTEC). Students  will explore topics such as placards, containers, materials Involved; determine whether materials have been released, PPE, emergency  decontamination and the evaluation of the surrounding conditions. The students through collecting hazard and response information will develop a “risk based response” plan.

Train-the-Trainer Hazardous Materials Core Operations

This course introduces the Trainer to the Ontario Fire College Hazardous Materials Core Ops course from the Instructor’s perspective. Each participant is given an in‐depth review of the content, learning outcomes, and evaluation techniques of the course, as well as the Instructor Guide for the course. Upon successful completion of this course, student‐learners will have knowledge and skills to teach  the OFC Hazardous Materials Core Ops course in their own departments.

Hazardous Materials Operations Plus

The Hazardous Materials Operations Plus course is accredited by the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) to NFPA  472.

This course prepares the student‐learner with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to respond to various hazardous materials incidents at the Operations (Mission Specific) Level of National Fire Protection Association Standard (NFPA) 472 – Standard on Professional  Competence of Responders to Hazardous Materials Incidents.     This course covers the operational tasks and duties expected to be performed by a team of emergency response personnel along with the required competencies to perform those tasks.

Please Note: Students are to provide their own bunker gear, SCBA and 2 air-cylinders.

Hazardous Materials Technician

This course provides the student‐learner with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to respond to various Hazardous Materials Incidents at the Technician Level of National Fire Protection Association Standard (NFPA) 472 ‐ Standard on Professional Competence of  Responders to Hazardous Materials Incidents. The course covers the operations performed by a team of emergency response personnel in order to gather and analyze situational, product, and container information necessary to, where possible, control the  release of a hazardous material substances, effect rescue or recovery, safely mitigate the incident, and assist with scene restoration, while utilizing specialized protective equipment.

Please Note: Students are to provide their own bunker gear, SCBA and 2 air-cylinders.
Prerequisite: NFPA 472 Hazardous Materials Operations Plus and completion of IMS 100.

NFPA 1001 FIREFIGHTER I

Fire Fighter I is the first level in the fire fighter program. Fire Fighter I is designed to take the firefighter to the first level of firefighter as recognized by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA 1001 standard).  This program is divided into three separate courses.   Students who complete Part A, B and C in the Fire Fighter I program are then eligible for knowledge and skills testing through Academic Standards and Evaluation with the Office the Fire Marshal & Emergency Management (OFMEM).

Student‐learners must provide their own turnout gear. To maximize firefighter safety, participants are required to bring their own SCBA and two air cylinders.
